Eatin’ Out: 16 mm

October 4, 2009

Not really a restaurant. Nor a coffee shop. It’s (literally) a house with people shuffling about in various rooms. A hang out, I’d say. A host for a variety of events including movies, art exhibitions, music and board gaming.

Note: they have a website although joining their group on Facebook might be a more efficient way of staying in the know.

Out & About: Parque Fundidora

September 17, 2009

If you’ve spent any time at all in Monterrey then you know about Parque Fundidora. Acres upon acres of park-ness; so big there are two metro stops for the same park. Bike rentals ($100 deposit but no cost). Ice skating ($60ish). Skate boarding. The beginning (or end) of Paseo Santa Lucia ($40). Museums. Art galleries. Movie theatre (known as the “Cineteca”; $25). All sorts of ways to waste time on a weekend afternoon.

Goin’ Out: Tec Raza

September 10, 2009

Not to be confused with Tex Raza which just so happens to be right around the corner from this establishment. I’m not sure if one bar owner is trying to confuse the people into coming into his bar rather than the competition’s or whether they are owned by the same people or whether it is one Bertha-sized conicidence, but that’s neither here nor there. Tec Raza is a two-tiered antro that has a live band on the weekends and plays pop music when the band goes to the john or for another round of beverages. The band is…ok (at best). The vibe is always good, though. Lots of people, lots of dancing, lots of making out. And there’s a 24 hour taco place across the street in case you wanna munch on something after a session of grinding and gulping.

Goin’ Out: Love Pub

September 8, 2009

Not much more than a hole in the wall, slightly off the beaten path. Cozy little spot to get a little love in the club (or in this case, pub). The music isn’t as overwhelming as you get in the majority of the bars/clubs in the city, so if you’re interested in a coherent conversation and American pop radio from the past three decades, you oughta give it a go. They also have their own 8 page periodical which is basically a list of events and a few ads and, for some reason, 4 or 5 articles published by someone else (e.g., Rolling Stone) and then just translated into Spanish.

COVER
$15 (on Saturdays)

DRINKS
Beer: $15
Mixed Drink: $90 (half price on Tequila drinks on Saturday)

Happenings: Week of Russian Film

September 7, 2009

106281

They’ve crossed the Bering Strait, worked their way down the west coast of Canada and the States and have finally found themselves in the land of Tequila and blistering heat. These handful of Russian films will only be here for a few more days (Sept. 4 -10th) and will only be showing at Cinépolis Galerías in Obispado, so get your fill while you can.

Goin’ Out: Rose

September 7, 2009

Live music. All-american covers all the time. The house band is a bunch of chicks that don’t play all that bad. In my opinion, the service is by no means affable and at times rather rude (e.g., making people move from a table because another group bought a bottle of whiskey while you just had a half empty bucket of beer, putting the wrong alcohol purposefully in your drink and hoping you won’t notice, etc.). Not to say that it isn’t a fun place (i.e., lots of eye candy and songs you know the words to); just be aware.
